Should You Hire a Professional Organizer?
Are you feeling overwhelmed by a household project? Working from home and having trouble focusing? Afraid to peek inside the closet/garage/junk drawer? It might be time to consider bringing in a professional organizer to help restore some peace of mind into your home - and beyond. As a professional organizer in the San Francisco Bay Area, the satisfaction of knowing that I’m making a real difference in someone's life is what drives me to help more people find clarity, balance and peace. From what I have observed, here are some signs that it might be time:
You're spending a lot of time looking for things and that time suck is bothering you.
One of my clients wisely said that she knew hiring me would be a good idea, but it wasn’t until she was spending more time than she liked looking for things that she realized it was time.
You're dragging your feet about having guests come over for playdates, dinner or to stay for the weekend.
You're bickering more with your partner/spouse, kids, roommates or officemates over space and clutter.
My friend who is a couples therapist told me that she frequently prescribes hiring housecleaners, nannies, meal delivery services and yes, organizers to busy couples who are in conflict and overwhelm over household duties. Bringing in a neutral outsider to organize is a great way to get things on track.
You aren’t doing certain fun activities because you’re waiting until those last boxes from the move are unpacked…which just doesn’t seem to be happening…
You're procrastinating a lot - maybe more than usual - and it always feels like there is so much to do.
This could be about something specific (like finding all the documents to file taxes) or about everything. They say clutter is just unmade decisions. You know how when your phone is running a program that slows down everything else that you are trying to do? That is what I believe clutter and disorganization can do to our brains. We might get used to the disfunction but it is quietly slowing down our systems by burning too much of our precious energy.
Your kitchen (or bathroom...or closet...) has never felt like it was set up correctly, but you don’t really know what to do to make it more efficient.
This is the “set it and forget it” aspect of organizing. Consider bringing in the expert eye of an organizer to get things set up the way you want them once, and then you can just rinse and repeat.
You know you have some nice pieces or special things that you would like to showcase, but can’t seem to get the styling right.
You keep buying the same things over and over because you didn’t realize that you already had them…
…which results in throwing away a lot of expired food, medicine, make up and hair supplies.
You love for things to be organized but don’t have the time to get them that way (or keep them that way).
You start organizing, but keep getting sidetracked.
I worked with a client recently who was pouring over old love notes and journals (reading me bits here and there!) While she read, I continued getting everything else sorted and ready for her to go through as she had time. Sometimes just having a detached partner is the key keeping things moving.
You find yourself having a general feeling of overwhelm and it isn’t entirely clear why.
You tend to put off projects or avoid dealing with certain areas of your home because they feel too daunting.
You have a hard time letting go of things, even if you know you don’t need them.
You are soooooo sick of looking at your place. Thanks to a certain virus, we’ve been in our homes more than ever, and maybe we are seeing that it isn’t what we wish it could be. An organizer can give ideas on how to make a place look, feel and operate so much better.
